AAA Fellow Justin Boddey.JPG

Spotlight: AAA Fellow

Dr Justin Boddey was the successful recipient of the 2010 Sir Keith Murdoch Fellowship for research in the field of Cell Biology, studying malaria infection of liver cells.

Justin conducted his research at The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, and has since returned to Melbourne.

In 2012 he was appointed Faculty at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Parkville and now manages his own laboratory studying liver-stage malaria in the Division of Infection and Immunity within the Institute.

When asked how the AAA Fellowship helped Justin advance his professional career, he responded by saying "We obtained some truly fantastic data while I was in Baltimore that we probably could not obtain elsewhere. This preliminary data was important to demonstrate our capabilities in order to start my own laboratory here in Melbourne and to submit a number of grant applications. We have just been funded by the Human Frontiers Science Program, which is a huge honour for everyone that has been involved."

Justin and his team were awarded $1.05 million to further work in this area. http://www.wehi.edu.au/site/latest_news/usd1.05_million_award_to_study_liver-stage_malaria

Justin said that the generous support of the American Australian Association was a key component of his recent success and that he felt very privileged to be a member of the AAA Alumni club.
