Spotlight: AAA Education Fellow

Dr Shane Antony Liddelow is a AAA 2011-2012 Neurological Fellow from Australia to the U.S.

Shane’s area of study is focused on neurobiology, developmental neuroscience and pharmacology. Shane is currently completing his postdoctoral training at Stanford University in the Department of Neurobiology.

When asked about the AAA Fellowship and how it has helped Shane achieve his professional goals, he advised that as a result of AAA’s Fellowship, he has been nominated in 2012 for the Chancellor’s Award at Melbourne University, as well as the Victorian’s Premiers Award for Medical Research. Shane further advised that AAA’s Neurological Fellowship has placed him in a strong position to apply for other competitive funding. In fact, he is currently preparing applications for a National Health and Medical Research Overseas Early Career Fellowship (4 years funding from Australia) and a National Multiple Sclerosis Society Fellowship (3 years funding from the USA). Shane stated that both funding bodies have commented highly on the American Australian Association Fellowship.

Shane’s ultimate goal is to run his own research laboratory in Australia, building on his multi-faceted approach to answering  fundamental questions of neurobiology. He is also using his time in the USA to build strong collaborations with key leaders in the field of research. Shane believes that it is these connections that will be of most use upon his return to Australia as these partnerships will foster the intellectual exchange that is imperative for future successes in science.
