Spotlight: AAA Education Fellow

Stephanie Mills is a Sir Keith Murdoch AAA Fellow from the US to Australia for 2011.

After graduating with a geosciences BSc Hons from the University of Texas at Austin, Stephanie began her PhD research at Monash University, Melbourne in January 2010. Stephanie’s research focuses on developing new geologic models for high-grade gold deposits; these models are then used in gold exploration projects all over the world. To develop these models, Stephanie studies how magma moving from the earth’s mantle to the crust can provide heat, fluids, and metals to form high-grade gold deposits. Based in Melbourne, Stephanie has had the opportunity to work with top geoscience researchers on an example of these gold deposits in China, where she has spent two field seasons studying an area that produces up to 25% of China’s total gold. The results of Stephanie’s research are being written up for publication, and she will conduct a final field season in China starting November 2011.

Stephanie has been living in Melbourne for 1.5 years and will spend another 2 years completing her PhD. Living in Australia has been a fantastic experience for her and she continues to travel to new parts of the country at every opportunity. She especially enjoys Melbourne’s easy-going way of life and Victorian culture—and easy access to beaches.

Stephanie is grateful to the AAA for its support of her studies, and she is excited to continue her participation with the AAA through the rest of her career.
