Spotlight: AAA Education Fellow

Jesse Colangelo-Lillis is an AAA Sir Keith Murdoch Fellow from the US to Australia for 2010-2011.

A student of the University of Washington in Seattle, Jesse has been at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra for just over five months.

At the ANU he has studied the relationship between the chemistry of the ancient oceans and the evolution of marine microorganisms. His focus has been on molecular fossils preserved in Australia's extensive and ancient geologic rock record. These molecular fossils can be indicative both of the groups of organisms living in the transient, shallow oceans that lay over the Australian land mass hundreds of thousands of years ago, as well as the conditions within those oceans. This project has allowed Jesse to work with Australian scientists in academia and industry, in the Northern Territory as well as in Canberra.

Jesse has enjoyed living and working with Australians and exploring the wonderful history and character the country’s capital, Canberra, has to offer.

On 31 August Jesse will return to the United States where he will continue work on this project as well as complementary genetic work on contemporary marine microbial evolution, in Seattle. He hopes to continue his involvement with the AAA as a founding alumnus.
