Baking American Style

Buppa's Bakehouse Opens in Newtown NSW

A delicious slice of North American-style baking cuisine has arrived in Newtown. Buppas Bakehouse offers ‘like Mom used to make’ American home-made baked goods (click image for gallery).
For anyone searching for genuine home-baked biscuits(‘cookies), pies, cheesecakes, and yes, New-York style bagels with a generous 'schmear' (big serving) of Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Buppa’s is your new second home.

Yes, There is a Buppa
‘Buppa’ as she is affectionately known to her family and friends, is the owner of this delightful shop, located at 482 King Street Newtown NSW.

Born near San Francisco, California, Buppa comes from a long line of bakers and learned to bake from an early age. By the age of 9 she was winning prizes in baking competitions. A few years on, Buppa migrated to Australia by way of London, and now lives with her husband, an accomplished photographer.

Like Momma Used to Make
Buppa does all her baking daily in the back area of the shop, which is open for all to see. Customers are surprised at how different home-made baking really tastes as compared to the mass-produced baked goods being served up in most bakeries. Buppa says it’s the biggest challenge she faces; convincing people that, yes, all her products are really prepared from scratch; no lard, no wax, no additives, no dyes.

If you’re used to bulk-baked goods, Buppa’s biscuits, muffins, pies and cakes are a pleasantly different experience. Her New York-style bagels are done the proper way; boiled then baked. The banana cinnamon muffins have banana in them. The butterscotch biscuits really do contain Nestle butterscotch chips.

If it can’t be done correctly with the best ingredients, Buppa doesn’t bake it. She sources American ingredients where necessary to create her products. As the notice on the wall of the bake shop states, “The only thing pre-packaged about Buppa is the passion she has long had for baking”.

More Than Biscuits

Buppa’s Bakehouse also sells sandwiches that can be toasted. Vegetarian and vegan options are available. Coffee and a large assortment of bag and leaf teas are also available. The place is warm and cozy with plenty of seating for those who want to sit and relax. Her husband’s photographs adore the walls.

Holiday Orders
Buppa provides baked goods for events, parties, gift bags, and dessert. Thanksgiving and Christmas are guaranteed to keep her busy. Buppa recommends ordering the traditional American holiday pies early for Thanksgiving. Yes, real pumpkin pie, and 3 different varieties of pecan pie will be on order, among other treats. Gingerbread houses will be available to order for the holidays. The ginger is made with dark molasses and yes, ginger, just like Grandma used to make. Special orders require 48 hours notice and a small deposit.

Hallowe’en will see the Bakehouse transformed into a mini haunted house, with delicious bat-shaped biscuits, and other ghoulish baked goods available.

Addiction in the Baking
Worth the trip to eclectic, funky Newtown, Buppa’s Bakehouse is about a 7-minute walk from the Newtown Train Station. Make a left out the station and walk along King Street. You’ll be hooked after just one biscuit.
