History of the Association

American Australian Association Limited

The American Australian Association Ltd. (AAA Ltd) is a non-profit organisation whose purpose is to promote friendship, cooperation and understanding between the peoples of the United States and Australia through a better understanding of their cultures and societies.

The  Association was incorporated as a limited liability company in Sydney on May 16, 2006. and is affiliated with the US-based American Australian Association Inc.

The Association in Sydney is a public charity; contributions to which are tax-deductible to the extent provided by the laws of the Australian Tax Office(ATO).

In 2007, the NSW chapter of the Australian American Association amalgamated with the Association in Sydney. The Association continues 4 of their programs:

  • Battle of the Coral Sea Commemorative Services (annually 1st Monday of May)
  • Hospitality in the Home
  • US Naval Ship Visits
  • Aussie Books on Board

American Australian Association Inc.

Founded in 1948 by Sir Keith Murdoch, the American Australian Association Inc is a nonprofit organization devoted to strengthening relations between the United States, Australia and New Zealand. It is the largest ex-pat organisation in the United States.

The Association continues to build and promote ties across the Pacific through its corporate, education, and social and cultural programs.

Headquartered in New York, the Association also has operations in New England and California.

The Association's prestigious Education Fund provides Fellowships for scholars pursuing advanced study and research at the post-graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral levels. Fellows pursue study from Australia to the US and from the US to Australia.

United States Studies Centre

at the University of Sydney

A recent initiative has been a joint project with the Australian Government to establish The United States Studies Centre (USSC) at The University of Sydney. The USSC is funded by federal and NSW Government, the University, and the private sector. AAA Ltd collaborated with the University in setting-up the United States Studies Centre and continues to assist in the function of the USSC.

In 2008, the USSC received its first students. Professor Geoffrey Garrett is the Centre's CEO.

The United States Studies Centre brings together leading scholars, politicians, business leaders and thinkers from across Australia and the US to research, debate and create new knowledge on American political, economic, social and cultural issues. The Centre’s rigorous academic program focuses on US studies and the relationship between the United States and Australia, offering an innovative and dynamic curriculum of postgraduate courses.

The Centre has a commitment to leading-edge research, quality teaching, and community engagement. Its five core activities are:

* Postgraduate coursework leading to University of Sydney awards;
* Research and research training;
* Executive education and short courses;
* Policy debate and development think tanks; and
* Community outreach.

Primary objectives of the United States Studies Centre are to:

* deepen Australian knowledge and understanding of the United States, particularly its culture, political system and government, so strengthening the relationship between the countries;
* complement and provide leadership on current Australian-United States educational projects;
* educate Australians in aspects of the United States relevant to their future careers, enabling them to engage with Americans more effectively;
* promote collaborative research and other programs between institutions in Australia and the United States.
